John C. Wright goes pantsless in an ugly scary way, and makes my book culling task a bit easier. Now, I'm rather sorry I bought his first trilogy (The Phoenix Exultant). Reading the genre was certainly less complicated before the Internet made it so easy to learn more about the person behind the name on the book cover. Don't even bother to engage him over there in his lj, there's no arguing with him, he's right there in the same ditch with OSC.

One of my favorite knitbloggers (Franklin from the Panopticon) went to see the latest Trek movie and here's what he had to say.

Ursula K. LeGuin! May there be many more words to treasure.

Garrison Keillor's Writer's Almanac made me quite happy on the drive into work by highlighting her birthday this morning.

io9.com has a fun checklist of how the main characters of various sf franchises (media and literary) compare on various wish-fulfillment criteria.

I am especially amused by the inclusion of Honor Harrington and Miles Vorkosigan on this list.

Classic Trek, no TNG, DS9, Voyager, or Enterprise.

I'll be a post-feminist in the post-patriarchy!

In these dark days, it's good to remember the wisdom of Saint Molly of Austin, "You gotta have fun while fightin' for freedom!", and I want to give a cyber-shoutout to those who make the struggle worth it for me.

Here's to both of the feminist-sf mailing lists (who keep us imagining new futures), the folks of [livejournal.com profile] wiscon (both on and off LJ), [livejournal.com profile] whileaway, and feminist bloggers worldwide (where would I be without Jeanne d'Arc at Body and Soul, Twisty at I Blame the Patriarchy, the gang at Pandagon, Feministe, just to name a few, Goddess bless you all!).

It's good to have friends at your back, among others both on and off LJ, [livejournal.com profile] wild_patience, [livejournal.com profile] badgerbag and of course, [livejournal.com profile] whumpdotcom are right there.

Here's to the struggle, we're fighting not only for ourselves, but our daughters, sons, nieces, nephews, and the generations to come.

I've been hanging out in the dealer's room at Potlatch, and almost the first thing I saw when I checked my friendslist was a note about Octavia Butler's sudden death here in Seattle. A huge chill went up my spine.

We've lost a good one here. Goddess rest you, Octavia. May your journey thrive.
