We are open to suggestions about stopping Yukino (and [personal profile] telophase's Sora) from pooping outside the box.

In our cat Didi's case, it was actually arthritis making litterbox use difficult. As soon as we got her on Duralactin, she stopped going outside the box. So step one is usually heading for the vet to, er, eliminate any health questions.

The other really common recs I've seen are: one litterbox per cat, different types of litter (some cats are finicky about this, apparently), cleaning/deodorizing the box oftener, or finding a space for the box that the cat thinks is safer.

We tried ALL of those for Didi before discovering the real problem, though, so that just goes to show what recommendations are sometimes worth... I hope you find a solution!

Seconding suggestion for a trip to the vet. For my cat the problem was constipation and subsequently associating the box with pain.

If the box has a lid, remove the lid. If the box does not have a lid, add a lid. Or provide one of each.

Make sure the cats aren't stalking each other in the box.

Thirding the vet visit suggestion. You never really know why a cat does something, and sometimes something really is wrong, esp. in an older cat.

Are there any territorial issues going on? I have a couple who decline to box if they're having some kind of dispute. The dominant one will sometimes decline as a show of dominance, and the submissive one will sometimes decline to use the dominant one's box. (This is why more boxes sometimes help, or putting a box in a "safer" location.)

If it's right next to the box, Yukino may be the dominant one who's telling the other cat not to use her box.
