"one must suffer in order to be beautiful"

NO FUCKING WAY. THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH GOOD SEDATIVES OR STYLISH STRAIGHTJACKETS ON THIS PLANET FOR ME TO GO THROUGH THIS. Oh, sorry. Didn't mean to go all [community profile] capslock_dreamwidth on you there, but SERIOUSLY, WTF!!!

When somebody told me about the fish pedicures where little fishies nibble on your toesies that was one thing, but having *ginormousslimymollusks* slither on your face in pursuit of beauty? What, bathing in the blood of virgins isn't enough for you?

*SHUDDER*

I remember reading the original "The Little Mermaid" at age eleven, and it includes a passage on the Little Mermaid's preparations for her sixteenth birthday celebration, which includes her grandmother getting seven clams to clamp onto her tail, and when the Little Mermaid complains that it HURTS, Grandmama!, that's what the older mermaid says: "One must suffer to be beautiful."

Clams on the tail versus snails on the face. We haven't learned anything in three hundred years, have we?

Yes it is, and yes it did. Hans Christian Andersen wrote some truly twisted stuff for ten year olds.

I'm sorry for hijacking the story thread, it's just, that story was the first time I ever encountered the concept, and then when I read the story and comments, I thought, "snails = molluscs = clams = YEOWCH on the tail = Little Mermaid". I'm weird, I know.
