The 19th Amendment was ratified.

Women fought for the vote back then, there's no excuse for us not to do the same, and boy howdy, do we have reasons to do so right now!

My grandmother and great-aunt, and their mother my great-gramma Rice, all campaigned for women's vote. I have never yet failed to vote in any election in which I'm eligible to vote, and this is not a year I'm going to start -- for one thing, this year I could be haunted by *three* generations of political trouble-making ancestresses!

I never got the chance to ask my Nana (great-grandma) or my avó (her mother) if they ever voted. I'm not even sure if my avó ever became a US citizen (left Portugal by way of Hawai'i to California when she was fourteen, and she died when I was 13). Nana was born here in Oakland.

Oh, I hope Washington state makes history tonight (our same-sex marriage referendum is doing well, last I heard -- civil rights shouldn't be votable, but if it passes I'll forgive my state for it).
